The previous decade witnessed rapid changes in the total reserve assets and their large share in the global product. It implies that in the 21 st century foreign exchange reserves became a more and more significant contributor to the devel-
opment of the global economy.
The paper attempts to provide answers to the following questions: 1. Have all the regions experienced an equally dramatic growth in the official reserve assets and their share in the global product? 2. What tendencies have been observed in this period in Poland? 3. Have the foreign exchange reserves contributed to the fulfilment of the original aims of their accumulation and holding? 4. What have been the primary motives for the accumulation of reserves in the analysed economies?
The analysis covers the years 1995–2011. In the study, first the theoretical aspects related to the general purposes of and reasons for accumulating foreign exchange reserves are explored. Next, the development tendencies and dynamics of changes in reserves are analysed in individual regions in the world and in Poland. Eventually, the author presents the reasons for accumulating official reserve assets and evaluates to what extent the purposes of their accumulation have been met in individual economies, based on the traditional indicators related to safety thresholds.

W minionej dekadzie notowano wysoką dynamikę rezerw dewizowych i duży ich udział w produkcie globalnym. Dowodzi to, że w XXI wieku aktywa rezerwowe odgrywały coraz większą rolę w rozwoju gospodarki światowej. Podjęto zatem próbę odpowiedzi na następujące pytania: 1. Czy we wszystkich rejonach geograficznych nastąpił wzrost tempa akumulacji rezerw i znaczenia w PKB? 2. Jakie tendencje w tym zakresie notowano w Polsce? 3. Czy w analizowanych podmiotach zgromadzone aktywa rezerwowe zapewniały realizację celów, dla których były gromadzone i utrzymywane? 4. Jakie były główne przesłanki akumulacji rezerw w badanych gospodarkach?
Analizą objęto lata 1995–2011. Najpierw przedstawiono teoretyczne aspekty związane z celami i motywami gromadzenia rezerw dewizowych. Następnie ukazano tendencje w dynamice ich rozmiarów w poszczególnych regionach geograficznych i w Polsce, a na koniec starano się zidentyfikować stopień realizacji celów i motywy gromadzenia oficjalnych aktywów rezerwowych w badanych gospodarkach na podstawie wybranych tradycyjnych wskaźników bezpiecznego ich poziomu.
